Congressional Record notes ACS Athletic Achievement

Congressman Honorable Howard Coble of North Carolina in the House of Representatives on Thursday, March 25, 2010, cited the athletic achievement of ACS. This was published in the Thursday, March 25, 2010, Vol. 156, No. 48 edition of the Congressional Record which includes the proceedings and debates of the 111th Congress, Second Session. Mr. COBLE. Madam Speaker, on behalf of the citizens of the Sixth District of North Carolina, we wish to extend our congratulations to the Alamance Christian School's boy's basketball team for winning its second State championship in 3 years. This team not only won the North Carolina Christian School Association 3A State championship, but they also broke a school record for wins in a season with 25.

Alamance Christian defeated Gospel Light 61-55 in overtime last month. The championship game featured resilience with a determination to win. With the game in overtime, Blake Marley made a clutch 3-point shot, while his teammates Will Shepherd and Brandyn Burns also came through for the team by excelling at the free throw line. The championship game win, as well as their phenomenal record, required great skill and athleticism, but Head Coach Jerry Bailey pointed to the boys love and care for each other as the secret to their success.

The championship team members are: Brandyn Burns, Jonathan Racke, Bud Hursey, Will Shepherd, Benton Tuck, Tyler VanNostrand, Anthony Winston, Thomas Klarr, Blake Marley, Kevin Avery, Philip Barker, Alan Barker, Cole Johnson, and Ethan Massey. The coaching staff was led by Coach Bailey and his able assistants Josh Howard and Brad Prentice.

Again on behalf of the Sixth District of North Carolina, we would like to congratulate the Alamance Christian School boys basketball team, the faculty, staff, students, and fans for an outstanding championship season. This team will be remembered in the history books for its record-breaking year and resilient win in the NCCSA championship game.

Russ earns all-state band position

All State is an organization that encompasses all the schools in North Carolina - public and private.

Noah Russ particapted in the North Carolina All-State Honors Band on the weekend of April 30-May 2. Auditions where held in March 2010 with the best middle school band students across the state of North Carolina, both public and private schools, competing. Noah was chosen for the position of second chair, Euphonium, for the Middle School All-state Band.

ACS ranks high in NCCSA Elementary Fine Arts competition-2010

The NCCSA Elementary Fine Arts competition for the Central Region of North Carolina was held at Gospel Light Christian School in Walkertown, NC on April 28-30, 2010. Students from ACS received a Superior rating and the Award of Excellence for the category in which they participated. The Award of Excellence is the highest award for the elementary competition.

ACS Students Receive Highest Award for Elementary Art: On Wednesday, April 28, six art students under the direction of Mrs. Ida Stephens received the Award of Excellence for their category and one Best in Show. Award of Excellence recipients are as follows: 4th grader, Maddie Ingram, for Chalk; 3rd grader, Jonathan Thomas for Crayon; 4th grader Caleb La Tour, for Pencil; 4th grader, Eric Orlowski, for Mixed Media; and 6th grader, Marianne Freeman, for Crayon. Eric Orlowski also received the Best of Show for all of the Art categories in the 3rd-4th grades. Many other art students at Alamance received a Superior or Excellent rating for their category.

ACS Piano Students Excel in Competition: Three students from ACS received a Superior Rating and the Award of Excellence (AOE) through the NCCSA Fine Arts Central Region for Piano on April 28. Rebecca Frazier, 5th grade, received the AOE for 5th and 6th grade Piano Solo; Savannah Shockley

and Matthew Cates, 3rd and 4th graders, received the AOE for their Piano Duet. Eric Orlowski, Marianne Freeman, and Karen Richardson, 5th and 6th graders, received Superior ratings for their piano solo and duet. Mrs. Sharon Stowe is the piano instructor at ACS.

ACS Students Achieve Excellence in Academic Testing: The following elementary students from ACS received 1st, 2nd, and 4th place awards on April 29, 2010 for Academic Testing through the NCCSA Fine Arts Central Region: Sam Fernandez received 2nd in Math, Amber Hogan received 2nd in Science, Spencer Ellingson received 2nd in Science, and Maddie Ingram received 4th in English. In addition Steven Diniz received a Superior rating in Journalism in the poetry category.

ACS Receives 1st Place Trophy and Award of Excellence: On Thursday, April 29, 2010, ACS received the first place trophy for Poetry/Speech under the direction of Mr. Duane Manning in the NCCSA Elementary Fine Arts Central Region Competition. The following students received the Award of Excellence for the Poetry/Speech competition: 3rd grader, Brittney Dean; 5th grader, Manuel Pittman; and 4th grader, Seth Bridges. Ethan Campbell, 6th grader, also received a Superior Rating in Speech.

Fine Arts "Showcase" 2010 Presentation

The Alamance Christian School music and speech departments will showcase fine arts talent on Monday, April 19 at 7:00 p.m. at the Paramount Theater in Burlington. Tickets will be on sale through the Paramount beginning on Wednesday, April 14. Ticket prices are $5 each. To reserve your seat call the Paramount at 336-222-8497. You will enjoy the product of a lot of hard work from our fine arts students as they perform the pieces that they prepared for fine arts competition.

ACS Baseball Pitcher Signs with Bluefield College

Jon Racke, senior at Alamance Christian School, Graham,NC, is signing his letter of intent to play baseball at Bluefield College in Bluefield, Virginia.

Jon will be double majoring in Accounting and Youth Ministries. Since 9th grade, Jon has been a three-sport athlete lettering in soccer, basketball, and baseball. He was All-State North Carolina Christian School Association in basketball and baseball. Since his freshman year, he pitched for Alamance Christian School, Junior Legion Post 63, and Senior Legion Post 63. Last season he posted a 1.85 ERA with 72 strikeouts in 45 innings of work.

Bluefield College, located in Bluefield, Virginia is a member of the Appalachian Athletic Conference in Division 1 NAIA and a member of the NCCAA. Bluefield won their national championship for NCCAA in Cincinnati, Ohio last season. Bluefield is ranked in the Top 40 pre-season poll for NAIA and #1 in NCCAA for their present 2010 season.

Haiti Earthquake Relief

The earthquake's devastation of the island of Haiti and its peoples has rocked the world with the media's imagery showing the huge toll of human life and the crippling impact on those survivors who must suffer through their loss and untold burden the lack of basic needs being met imposes.

One of our alumni, Jodi Speicher, ACS Class of 2006, called to ask if ACS would like to collect supplies. Her grandfather, Jim Speicher, Sr. is a missionary in Haiti where he founded the Haiti Gospel Ministries. The ministry was founded for the purpose to establish and support the Bethany Baptist Christian School in Lakrobat, Haiti. Since the earthquake the school is closed; however, Mr. Speicher has opened the doors and they are feeding and tending to those in need as supplies last. For more information about the ministry go to www.haitigospelministries.org.

To aid Haiti Gospel Ministries as they compassionately dispense relief to the peoples of Haiti, our preschool through 6th grade brought in non-perishable food, water, and hygiene items for distribution to the Haitian people in Lakrobat, near Jacmel with whom Haiti Gospel Ministries can make contact. Our students also brought in $295 to help those in need.

Jodi Speicher will be taking the supplies and money to Florida in about a week and it will be sent to her grandfather, Mr. Jim Speicher, by way of Missionary Flights International.

Homecoming 2010: A Magical Night

Friday night, January 8th, students, parents, and alumni filled the gym with amused laughter and sighs of amazement. Homecoming 2010 continued with the excitement of years past while adding a few surprises for the audience.

Once the crowd had been held in suspense long enough, the stage curtains drew back to reveal Mr. and Miss ACS 2009, Justin Marley and Katherine Johnston, shadowed by a pink and blue Disney castle, which was created by Ashley Thomas and Renee Brown.

The first couple, Courtney Bunker and Tyler Van Nostrand, was brought in on a carriage drawn by two "horses," Alex Shockley and Mich'al Tice, who garnered several giggles from the crowd. The next couples, Kaitlyn Forehand and Jon Racke; Michelle Jacobson and Benton Tuck; Jaclyn Myers and Caleb Barker; and Ashley Thomas and Nat Foust, also rode in on the carriage and took their places on the floor, filling the gym with purple, black, and green shimmers and sparkles.
Little Mr. and Miss ACS 2010, Brad Bennett and Morgan Billings, dressed in the prince and princess costumes from Cinderella, flashed big smiles as they brought the much anticipated envelope. As Mr. Manning announced Mr. and Miss ACS 2010, the crowd erupted in applause and whistles. Kaitlyn Forehand and Caleb Barker, after being crowned, took their walk across the floor and then claimed their seats in front of the castle. Their beaming faces proved that happy endings aren't just for fairy tales.

College Planning Seminar

Senior and Junior Parents attended a seminar recently at Alamance Christian School on how to best prepare their son or daughter for college, how to choose a college, and what to expect at college. ACS High School Principal, Mr. Robert Thurman, shared insights from his own experiences from the several colleges he has attended as well as pertinent information he gleaned from counselors’ meetings in which he recently participated.

The ACS meeting was well attended and parents had keen interest in the information he shared. He will also share these insights with the Juniors and Seniors in the coming weeks.
