ACS Warriors Net 2011 NCCSA State Championship

--Bob LaTour

Once again, tradition made an impact upon the outcome of our soccer season! With only seventeen players on our roster and a very young junior varsity team, we depended upon faithful alumni to enable us to scrimmage. The quality of the scrimmages raised the quality of our game. After graduating several seniors from last year's NCCSA third-place roster, most folk's expectations for this year's squad likely did not include making the final four let alone winning a championship. A strong defense and balanced scoring gave us the one-two punch needed to post a 13-1-3 record that charted six shut-outs and seven other games in which our opponents netted only one goal. That included our only loss which came against Vandalia without the services of Ethan Massey and Will Johnston. In the four remaining games, two goals were scored by each opponent. For the year, the Warrior offense garnered 49 goals while the defense only allowed 15.

Highlights for the regular season certainly have to include beating Vandalia 3-2 under the lights in Greensboro, coming back from two down to beat Gospel Light 5-2 in Walkertown and tying Wake 1-1 in Raleigh. The post season was filled with drama. After scoring three goals in the first eight minutes during the quarter-finals against Lee, ACS gave up two goals to allow Lee to come within a goal of sending the game into overtime. Chase Johnson slammed the door at the sixty-second minute mark to insure a trip to the final four. Both the semi-finals against Wake and the finals against Vandalia saw first half scores of 0-0. ACS went up on Wake with a goal from Luca Bernacchi in the fiftieth minute and Will Johnston iced the game with four minutes remaining. In the finals against Vandalia, Ethan Massey chipped a direct kick over the Vikings' wall and into the net to put the Warrior on top with only fourteen minutes left on the clock. Chase Johnson added a well-earned security goal four minutes later.

Blue-collar hard work and unselfishness was the key to our success, humanly speaking. Luca Bernacchi (Italy) and Max Nols (Germany), as well as eight guys from last year's junior varsity, joined the remnant of eight from last year's varsity squad to make up the 2011 edition of Warrior Soccer. We praise the Lord for enabling us to play as a team and to improve over the season. We trust that our efforts brought glory to God as we sought to finish and to practice our team verse that we quoted before each half. Proverbs 16:3 "Commit your works unto the Lord and your thoughts will be established." We will sorely miss our four seniors (Ethan Massey, Phillip Barker, Jacob Ingle, MarkKephart) and our two international students. Great season, Warriors!

Gallery - click here
