Resume Do's and Don'ts


DO’S

  • Be concise – a resume is be an outline of your educational and professional qualifications
  • Create a resume that fits the job you’re after – always make sure that your resume is functional and applicable
  • Carefully proofread and edit your resume – read your resume at least two times and look for mistakes, then let a friend look it over
  • Make the effort and investment to produce a quality finished product
  • Keep your resume up-to-date

 
DON’TS

  • Don’t be cute or fancy when it comes to layout and presentation – your resume is the first impression that you will make with a prospective employer
  • Don’t use passive phrases such as “Was responsible for” or “Duties included”
  • Don’t exaggerate
  • Don’t overlook non-work experiences such as charity work or a cultural organization you are a part of
  • Don’t include frivolous information such as salary requirements or marital status
  • Don’t label the document “Resume”
