On Saturday, December 6, the Lady Warriors (4-2) defeated Wilson Christian Academy (5-4) to win the 24th annual Charger Christmas Classic. To reach the championship game, they defeated Thales Academy 46-33 the previous evening.
The championship game was a low-scoring affair with both teams enduring a prolonged, scoring drought - a situation neither team faced in their prior games. In what may have been a first in the tournament, as well as for each coach, both teams failed to score in the third quarter. For Wilson, the scoring drought extended from the second quarter through the first part of the fourth.
The game opened with Wilson scoring the first 8 points, but the Lady Warriors battled back to enter halftime with the lead. In the final quarter, ACS ended their scoring drought to extend their lead and win the close contest. The team faced some adversity as our tallest player fouled out with more than 5 minutes to go, and struggles at the free throw line did not help stretch the lead.
Seniors Selah Johnson and Maci Vandeventer lead the scoring and both made it on the all-tournament team. Selah was named MVP as well.
In reflecting on the game, Coach Burns said, "It was two good teams playing really good defense. I know (the game) made us better." The Warriors will, once again, face Wilson again at the final home game of the season, which will set the state for a likely meeting during the playoffs.
